Cleaning Copper

Why does copper tarnish?

Copper tarnishes due to a natural chemical reaction called oxidization.

This is what makes copper turn brown, black, and even green over time.

When the metal loses electrons to oxygen, it protects its outer later by forming a barrier called copper oxide to protect itself from the outside world.

What causes copper to tarnish?

Humidity, rain, oils from skin, sweat, and cleaning products all accelerate the natural tarnishing process.

Restore copper’s bright luster by:

  • Polishing with fine steel wool
  • Soaking in ketchup (yes, ketchup!)
  • Soaking and lightly scrubbing with salt and lemon
  • Soaking and lightly scrubbing with salt and vinegar
